A Reflection of My Time at ACLC
Personal Qualities: I feel that ACLC pushes you to map a whole new field of personal qualities in order to succeed in such a unique learning environment. One of the keys strategies I had to dial down here was my time management. Because we have more freedom and flexibility than other schools we need to prepare ourselves to get done what needs to be done in the right amount of time. I have seen kids come to ACLC and in their first year not have everything together and it shows. I’m not claiming ACLC to be some sort of super rigorous academic school but it can take kids a little while to find the right rhythm and routine. An attitude of an ACLC student also has something to do with the work ethic of said student. If he/she works well in groups their attitude will do well for the school because we are so community driven.
New Basics: ACLC strives to have higher standards in communication, languages, along with the basics like reading, writing, math and global awareness. I feel like maybe not every key feature would apply to every student at ACLC but I know most of these kids operate on a different level of thinking that that of a kid going to a traditional high school. When students reach the upper classes they often become involved in leadership and really start taking charge of school events, clubs, and fieldtrips. Something you wouldn’t see too often in traditional high school students whose only job is to make the teachers job easy. Our classes run at a different level and pace than many other highschools, and as a result we have to take more years of math and language classes to be above the rest.
Thinking and Personal Skills: The way ACLC is designed it requires kids to interact more with each other and get involved with one another’s learning. At traditional schools in California education is like a factory job. Punch in at a certain time, punch out later in the day, ACLC is more than that. Kids are engaged in their learning and therefore more involved with each other. I have also learned to think more independently without teachers telling me what to do.
Interpersonal and Collaborative Ability: This ties into the previous bullet point in terms of collaboration. ACLC promotes the collaboration between learners. I believe that education can be achieved through feeding off other that are learning with you. ACLC allows learners to access interpersonal skills along with collaborative skills that when paired make a good combination of learning ability. If there is one thing public schools are lacking it’s the use of pairing students to bring education to a higher level.
Technology: Well I have been honest about my school in the past sections so I will do the same. ACLC claims to be one of the more technologically advanced schools in the area. The only thing I have learned technology wise as a student here making beats on a computer program called Reason. Other than that the Center is lacking working computers, most teachers don’t reply to emails sent to them by students, and no pieces of technology are used in class to teach a lesson. I do think we have more than most school but I wouldn’t call it a strong point.
